Fitment Recipes & Tires

Recipe 1 – Entry-Level

  • Tire size: 265/70R17
  • Wheel offset range: +0 to +10 is the safe range; 0 to -10 increases rub risk and spray.
  • Recommended lift: 1–2" lift is recommended to improve alignment range and reduce rubbing under compression, but this tire can be run on stock suspension.
  • Required fixes: Minor rubbing on front mud flaps at full lock on stock suspension; light plastic trimming may be needed; alignment strongly recommended.
  • Known downsides: Slight MPG loss compared to stock tires; slight increase in highway noise; higher price compared to stock tire prices.
  • Who this setup is for: Daily drivers who want a reliable, durable all-terrain with minimal compromises.
  • Who should NOT run this setup: Owners prioritizing a quiet ride, maximum MPG, or lightweight tires.

Recipe 2 – Aggressive

  • Tire size: 285/70R17 (≈33")
  • Wheel width & offset: 8.5" wheels recommended; +0 to -10 offset preferred for daily driving. More aggressive offsets (-10 to -18) increase rubbing, road spray, and required trimming.
  • Required lift: 1–2" lift is strongly recommended, but it does not eliminate rubbing. The lift primarily improves alignment range and suspension control — not tire clearance.
  • Required fixes: Plastic trimming (front fender liner); mud flap removal or modification; proper alignment. Minor rubbing at full lock is common, especially in reverse. Additional modifications may be required depending on wheel offset and suspension travel.
  • Known downsides: Noticeable MPG loss; increased road noise compared to 265s; heavier steering feel; rubbing under certain conditions is normal, not a defect; may worsen shift behavior on stock gearing, especially at highway speeds.
  • Who this setup is for: Owners who want the largest practical tire without committing to extensive cutting or re-gearing.
  • Who should NOT run this setup: Daily drivers prioritizing quietness, fuel economy, and zero rubbing.

Recipe 3 – Daily Driver Sweet Spot

  • Tire size: 265/70R17
  • Wheel width & offset: 8–8.5" wheel rim width; +10 to 0 offset recommended. Stock wheels are the ideal rim for this tire size and should be the default choice for running 265/70.
  • Required lift: No lift required. A 1–2" lift is optional if additional clearance or improved stance is desired, but it is not necessary for fitment or drivability.
  • Required fixes: Minor plastic trimming or mud flap modification may be needed depending on tire brand and alignment. Alignment definitely recommended.
  • Known downsides: Slight MPG loss compared to stock tires; minimal increase in road noise; conservative appearance compared to larger tire setups.
  • Who this setup is for: Owners who want to upgrade tires without starting the modification domino effect.
  • Who should NOT run this setup: Owners prioritizing maximum off-road clearance or aggressive stance.

If you're unsure which setup to choose, Recipe 3, the Daily Driver Sweet Spot, is where most Tacoma owners should start. It's a low-risk entry that preserves ride quality, reliability, and drivability, without pushing you into the expensive cycle of chasing fitment issues and replacement parts.

Tires

Toyo Open Country A/T III

Parts Store pricing: 265/70R17 Loading… · 285/70R17 Loading…

Why: Balanced all-terrain that prioritizes ride comfort, durability, and predictable handling. Quieter than most A/T tires and well-suited for daily-driven Tacomas that see dirt, gravel, and light snow.

Avoid if: Fuel economy is a top priority, or you frequently drive in deep mud or heavy, unplowed snow where more aggressive tread is needed.

Falken Wildpeak A/T4W

Parts Store pricing: 265/70R17 Loading… · 285/70R17 Loading…

Why: One of the strongest all-around performers for mixed terrain and harsh weather. Excellent traction in rain, snow, and winter conditions, with strong sidewall construction for off-road durability.

Avoid if: You prioritize the lightest possible tire for MPG, or want a softer, car-like ride.

BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO3

Parts Store pricing: 265/70R17 Loading… · 285/70R17 Loading…

Why: A proven all-terrain with predictable performance on dirt, gravel, and moderate off-road terrain. The KO3 handles wet and light snow well, resists chipping on rough roads, and wears evenly. Its tread design balances traction and noise better than many aggressive alternatives.

Avoid if: You want the quietest possible highway ride, maximum fuel economy, or frequent deep-mud performance — it's not a dedicated mud tire.

Quick comparison

  • Toyo Open Country A/T III → Quietest ride, best daily comfort
  • BFGoodrich KO3 → Most durable, best for rocky and abrasive terrain
  • Falken Wildpeak A/T4W → Best traction in rain, snow, and winter conditions

If your Tacoma is a daily driver that occasionally sees trails, the Toyo leans comfort-first. If you drive year-round in bad weather or want maximum all-condition traction, the Falken is the safer bet. BFGoodrich A/T KO3 is a balanced all-terrain choice if you want daily comfort and predictable off-road traction without giving up ride quality.
